Food Drive and Presidential Roasting

Rotarians donated lots of food at a special drive for the
Christian Action Guild.

Fun, fellowship, and food (just not for us!) at the Guaranty Bank

The Rotary Club of Golden held a special food drive for the Christian Action Guild on May 15th.

In the summer the need for food and assistance rises with all of the kids staying home during the day. Jo Ann Thistlewood asked us to supply her with canned meats and other food to make full meals. Beef stew, chili, chow mien and the like are great contributions.

Eileen Schurmann hosted the party in the lobby of Guaranty Bank at 16800 West Colfax Avenue.

Some of the booty!

We also seized the opportunity to roast our beloved past president, Regina Benson.  In addition to leading the club for a year, Regina has contributed countless hours to service projects, including food drives for the Christian Action Guild and our musical instrument recycling program, "Play it Again."

Regina displays her roast while sporting an elegant shitake mushroom accessory.  President Sandy lavishes still more gifts on her predecessor, including the much-sought-after Rotary Rob Budda. Dana recognizes Regina's great work with the
"Sit on it Again" program, which accepts used toilet seats and refurbishes them for poor families who have nothing to sit on.

But seriously folks, Regina led the club through some great programs and great improvements:

  • Introduced e-mail distribution of newsletter
  • The fantastic Annual Picnic at Grampsas Park
  • The annual Peach Sale with $10,000 profit.
  • School year revival of the D’Evelyn Interact Club
  • The purchase of $4,000 in food shares complemented by several hundred toys for needy families served by the Christian Action Guild.
  • The annual Holiday Party at the Arbor House
  • The Ski Train fellowship trip
  • The Flower Power Project where more than 700 flowering plants were delivered to seniors and rest homes throughout the community.
  • The contribution of $1,000 toward a District Disaster Project to benefit victims of earthquakes in India and El Salvador,
  • The Play it Again Program to place used but refurbished musical instruments, in the hands of musicians in Golden schools
  • The Rotary sign posted at the entrance to the community on 6th Avenue.
  • The Jeffco Community Service Award
  • The District Publicity Award
  • The District’s Foundation Giving Award
  • The special citation from RI President Frank Develyn
  • The formation of a new Interact club at Golden High
  • Sent five Golden High students to RYLA camp
  • Started a new program to recognize outstanding Drama, Music, and Creative Arts students with the first Annual Student Artist Awards

Thanks for a great year, Regina!
